Read below wherever it's most convenient.
There's so much bad college admission advice driven by marketing fear or proximity-based storytelling, rather than by expertise and care for kids. I've been on a lot of airplanes, but I don't offer flying lessons-- yet influencers gain followers by offering formulas based on (allegedly) their own experiences.
Folks with no (or very limited) background in admission offices, or in settings that allow you to observe cohorts of students navigate the application process over time, offer advice that can be, at worst, a waste of valuable time, or, at best, damaging to a young person's development.
Given that reality, it can feel like an uphill battle to lower the temperature, get honest messages into the discourse, and create space for kids to figure out who they are and practice being that person.
So I was beyond thrilled that Town & Country Magazine asked me to offer a counterpoint to the loudest messages out there. The fact is that there is a profession full of people who share my values and recognize the truths and healthy philosophy I believe in.
